Hawaiian Sushi

Recently we spent another few days on the sunnry shores of Oahu on Waikiki beach. It gaves us an opportunity to revisit some of the great food places that we went to last time and find a couple of new ones. While I indulged in the turkey plate that Lulu's put on for Thanksgiving, I made sure to have my very own Butkus burger this time. no disappointment there. We also stopped in at Leonard's and had a few malasadas doce (lovely doughnuts)- okay, maybe more than just a few.

The highlight for me, every time we visit the Hawaiian islands, has to be the sushi. We went back to a little sushi bar on Kuhio drive. The chef manages this place pretty much by himself. He takes his time with every order, so you cannot be in a hurry. We ordered lots of sushi, but the most spectacular rolls of the evening were the rainbow roll and the one with the soft shell crab. They were not only candy to the eye, but pretty much tasted like candy too. We also visited Genki Sushi, which has a rotating sushi bar. It not only had the usual rolls and nigiri, but also had tuna salad, and corn. It was here that Corey had the hotdog and egg sushi roll. Surprisingly quite tasty and sure to please the fussy people who won't eat the raw fish. At yet another place, they offered ham and cheese sushi. We stayed away from that one, but I had the best pickled plum (umeboshi) since leaving Japan. Great place for the adventurers at heart. Why eat at the usual chains, when you can check out these unlikely combinations in little tucked away spaces?

To all of the dead Japanese sushi masters, who might be rolling in their graves,and the live ones, who migt bar me from eating at their counter if they only knew, my apologies for liking Hawaiian sushi better. I just love the taste and the fact that sushi proves adaptable to its environment, keeps its essence intact and is still very edible.
