F is for Foot Massage

Massage is definitely part of the culture here in China. There are numerous massage locations around this city, and they are frequented by locals and expats alike. In fact, there are probably a dozen within a 1 mile radius of the apartment. Let me be clear: these are not your sensual, naked with oil massages. These are special Chinese therapeutic massages. The masseurs are super professional and trained in the relief of pain through manipulation of pressure points. Massages vary in price, but cost on average around 20 dollars for a body (CDA). Foot massages cost even less.

Foot massages last about one hour and begin with submerging your feet in really hot water for a bit. Then the feet are slathered in a cream; a eucaliptus based one in the winter and something more soothing and cooling in the summer. Then the masseurs firmly take one foot at a time, find the sore spots and work on them. The treatment usually ends with a leg massage to the knee, some slapping and patting, and a removal of any excess cream. Feels great!

Almost every woman who has been a guest at our place in Shanghai has ventured out with me for one of these. They are practically a required cultural experience. Even if you are ticklish. And especially if you are employed on your feet. Many of my Shanghai girlfriends have their favorite spots and often go together, and use it as an opportunity for a quiet time out with friends.

***This is a stock image from the internet. I just went recently to a newly opened foot massage place in the hopes to take a photo of my friend's feet for a more real feel for this post, but the lighting was too horrible for a good shot.

Massage and foot reflexology are very effective therapies. I was a therapist for several years when I was in my 50's. Used it for pain management in the home health agency where I worked.
