Another Day, Another Coconut.
I have been accused of liking coconut to the extreme of wanting to add it to everything that I eat. I have always thought that accusation to be quite unfair, since I certainly wouldn't want to eat it with liver- I prefer some fried onions, perhaps a bit of bacon and caramelized apple slices with that dish.
However, since I was recently in a tropical country, and coconuts were listed on the menu, and were possibly one of the cheapest drinks there (coca cola you will be interested to know, was cheaper), I decided to indulge. After ordering and paying, I watched the woman behind the counter wield a very large knife and give the coco shell a couple of sound whacks. She peeled a bit of the skin back and inserted a straw. It was a challenge to get it back to the chair walking like a great fakir on the great expanse of very hot sand, since it was brimming full of liquid. It was worth all of the effort; the nut had been chilled in the fridge and the cool, cool and clear liquid, with really just a hint of the coconut flavor I adore, was amazingly refreshing. It was also a nice alternative to beer, especially before noon.
(p.s. these were the nuts that we should have used for our scientific expedition on the innards of a coconut, conducted here and here.)
