Donuts

One of the highlights of the week when I lived in Japan over twenty years ago, was the Friday trek to the Okazaki campus of the college, and the stop at Mr. Donuts for a couple of their hot and fresh donuts. Upon arrival at the college, we would put a couple of yen in the coffee vending machine and eat them in the nearly deserted cafeteria of the campus, before we would go up to our respective classes and assist in an English class. That was my best class of the week, and I made some good friendships in that classroom. I have some really good photographs of a Christmas party there.

Mr Donut has arrived in Shanghai!! It opened a store this past summer on the very busy, very touristy Hua Hai Road. Now and then, for nostalgia, and for the sweet craver that lives with me, I stop in and pick up a few. They taste pretty much as I remember them- not too sweet and the cake donuts have a lovely crunchy exterior. We tend to buy the old fashioned cake, and if I remember to, I get the glazed ones. Note the front donut is different than the others. I felt a bit adventurous and bought the chocolate dipped matcha (green tea) old fashioned. Not bad, but not great, so it won't be a repeat purchase.

I'm off to Tokyo in a few days- so we will be keeping our eyes open for Mr. Donuts, along with all of the other items on our lists.[p.s. I meant to post this before I left!!]

Last week, I bought donuts at the Saugeen Maple Syrup festival for Chistine, Julie and myself. They were cooked in a little cast iron pot of oil over a fire, glazed with maple syrup, and served hot. Lovely on a day when it was still too cold for the sap to be running.
