Foooooood

I promised that I would come back and talk about this food place on the basement floor of a large retail mall that specializes in high end international shops. It is called Megabites, and there are a few of them around Shanghai. Each location has a number of restaurants that serve all kinds of food- from dumplings to teppan yaki, noodles to soup. First you buy a card, with a deposit of a few RMB for the plastic, and then you load it with the desired amount (20, 50 , 100 RMB), and walk around to each restaurant and decide what food you would like. The card is like a debit card, and each of the vendors have a machine that subtracts the cost of the ordered food or drink.

In the past, I have had a Taiwan style soup with dumplings and noodles, and some red beans and ice (see previous post). This time I chose something that caught my eye first time I walked around. This is a dish that begins as sticky rice steamed in a lotus leaf wrapping. Then the chef adds sausages, egg, garlic, vegetables, onion, and other mystery ingredients. He heats them all up in a smoking wok, and serves them back on the lotus leaf for your eating pleasure. And pleasure it was indeed. Might have this again. It came with an egg drop soup and was about 3.50 USD.
