Fruit
Check these out.... I saw them in the store about a week ago and bought them on a whim. I had never seen them before and did not know what to do with them (peel them, boil them first ??). The label on the bin at Carrefour (one of the imported grocery chains- this one is from France. We also have Tesco from the UK) called them jujubes. Not how I would have described them.
I let them sit on the counter until C's teacher came earlier this week. I asked them what they were. He told me, and I have forgotten. More importantly, he told me how I could eat them. They are much like an apple; the peel is as thin as that of an apple, it has the familiar crunch, and is a little tart on the tongue. After that, it's all different. It's a little starchy, and not very sweet. It is meant for eating fresh, and has one large pit in the center. I would love to see the plant/tree it grows on since it has a bit of a green tomato look and taste. Quite good and I plan to buy more of them at the next opportunity.
