The top image appears to be a very ancient and weathered ram that I spotted in a corner of the temple yard. I don't know anything of its significance or how it got there- This is one of those times where finding someone to talk to and ask questions about this place would have been most educational.

The bottom image is a classic symbol of Japan- the mighty chrisanthemum.
